Expert for Humanoid & Polyfunctional Robotics (Industry) – Feasibility Study & Board Decision

About the project
An international manufacturer of technical rubber/polymer products for industrial applications is evaluating the use of humanoid/polyfunctional robots in production. Multiple manufacturing sites across Europe. A pilot project with an external technology partner is already running. Goal: cover physically demanding tasks under variable conditions and growing staff shortages where conventional automation fails.
The company is in an early but serious evaluation phase. Use cases under review:
  1. Heavy component handling in production: components in the 15–20 kg range placed precisely into production machinery — tight space, physically demanding, hard to standardize
  2. Material handling at processing plants: feeding, weighing, and transporting raw materials and chemicals under high heat
  3. Incremental shopfloor rollout: from simple tasks to complex, situation-dependent processes, digitalizing implicit production know-how
Approach is based on Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models with real and synthetic training data. Open question: how to scale the required Nvidia-based compute infrastructure (edge vs. cloud) cost-effectively.
There's internal support, but the board needs a credible, neutral outside assessment before approving investment.

Scope of work
  1. Review existing project approach (use cases, training data strategy, partner model, tech selection)
  2. Assess technological maturity vs. marketing hype, including relevant humanoid robotics vendors
  3. Feasibility study on planned use cases: viability, timeline, risks
  4. Infrastructure recommendation: in-house vs. Platform-as-a-Service
  5. Prepare clear, practical board presentation — no consulting overhead
  6. Optional: site visit to a production plant in Central Europe
Requirements
  1. Hands-on industrial experience with humanoid/polyfunctional robotics, not just theory
  2. Solid knowledge of current vendors, VLA models, and AI training infrastructure
  3. Ability to separate real maturity from marketing
  4. Experience preparing board-level decision materials
  5. Independent freelancer — no large consulting firms, no pure theorists
Project Details
  1. Start: ASAP
  2. Duration: 3-6 months to start with, possible extension
  3. Workload: flexible, depending also on your availability
  4. Location: Remote with a single visit to the site to understand the requirements
  5. Language: English must, German is a bonus
Apply with references to comparable projects - this is the key to having your application stand out! A couple of sentences are enough to begin with :) Please also share your updated CV and expected hourly rate as well as your starting date/availability.
