Automatization to generate the tables needed for Microsoft Licensing portal
Bedag Informatik AG (Internet und Informationstechnologie, 500-1000 Mitarbeiter)

In order to license all Windows machines(Physical and Virtual), a big and very complex table had to be sent to Microsoft.
While the licensing formula needed some data that could not be properly exported, a tramendeous effort was necessary to re-create the table every year.

I have developed a script to collect all informations, about all Windows machines and figure out how much resources are used in every clusters for running Windows machines, add the resources, add the spare capacity(not always required), and figure out the number of hosts to be licensed. At this step, I had to calculate the number of cores to be licensed based on the cluster usage and some other factors.

The final result is an exportable Kibana table with the exact number of vms, cores and host, and the additional information for each of them(serial number, RAM, HW vendor, etc.).

VMs migration from XEN to Nutanix
Bedag Informatik AG (Internet und Informationstechnologie, 500-1000 Mitarbeiter)

During this project I had to migrate many VMs from XEN platform to Nutanix platform.

I often had to manually correct xensource files when the datastores IDs didn't matched, and various other debugging and corrections.

On every VM that I migrated, there was a chain of tasks that had to be properly implemented:
  1. Make sure the VLAN is configured on the destination cluster and network switches.
  2. Various pre-check(enough space, APP platform restrictions, etc.)
  3. Create a change
  4. Set the downtime(5 minutes required, 20 minutes for tolerance) in monitoring system
  5. Check with the VM/Application owner and the final customer, and establish an appointmenttime for VM migration
  6. Proceed with the migration
  7. Power On the migrated VM
  8. Post-checks

Upgrade Xen environment from v7 to v8 - >300 Xen hosts & >3000 VMs
Bedag Informatik AG (Internet und Informationstechnologie, 500-1000 Mitarbeiter)

I had to upgrade about 70 Xen Clusters running on version 7.x to 8.2.x, all without downtime.

During the implementation, I had to often do some adjacent tasks by myself:
- temporary "re-organize" clusters, and create temporary mini-clusters to free some space before proceeding with the upgrade
- organize comissioning and decomissioning temporary servers
- adding disks or creating temporary datastores-> i created and deleted the Datastores(as LUNs) by myself on Hitachi Storage System
- Puppet & Foreman adaptations after upgrade

Test Xen 8.2 and adapt Puppet modules for the new version
Bedag Informatik AG (Internet und Informationstechnologie, 500-1000 Mitarbeiter)

I had to upgrade 2 test clusters to 8.2 and test various scenarios with standard Linux and Windows VMs.

When the tests were done, since the config management on the XEN environment is made with Puppet, I had to adapt a lot of modules so that they are compatible with Xen 8.x also, not only with Xen 7.x .

During the modules adaptations, I had to re-work a few big Ruby scripts

Various automatizations for virtual infrastructure
Bedag Informatik (Internet und Informationstechnologie, 500-1000 Mitarbeiter)

Projects:
  1. Automatic snapshot cleanup with multiple retention criteria. It was developed in Python, is compatible with Xen, VMware and Nutanix, and runs as a scheduled pipeline
  2. Automatic Cluster deployment for Nutanix. It was developed in Bash, and it does 99% of the work which usually took 6-8 hours if had to be made manually.
  3. Automatic VLAN configuration. It was developed in Python, and the VLANs are automatically configured on Nutanix and Cisco Switches based on multiple criteria(datacenter location, customer id, cluster type, etc.)
  4. Infrastructure inventory. It was developed in Python, and the purpose of the project is to collect all possible information about physical and virtual infrastructure. At a later stage, Icreated various dashboards with resources overview and also with detailed infrastructure informations for admins.
  5. Various small automatizations to replace some manual tasks.

Infrastructure administrator
Worldline GMBH (Internet und Informationstechnologie, 1000-5000 Mitarbeiter)

  • I was responsible together with one more colleague of the entire local infrastructure (6 Clusters and 400+ VMs), and I was responsible alone about access, some automatizations and workarounds for some specific situations on the global infrastructure (around 100 Servers). We provided IT Services for one of the biggest tech companies worldwide (300.000+ employees), specifically the Healthcare division of the company.
  • There was a very wide area of technologies which I was working with, and I was mostly involved on the Virtualization (VMWare and XEN), OS Install, config and Update, Cluster Upgrade, Backup, Network and Automatizations
  • During my time in the company, I have designed the backup concept of our infrastructure. We have bought VEEAM B&R for Windows VMs, Borg for Linux VMs and Docker containers data. I have also designed and implemented the Disaster and Recovery concept which was implemented by replicating the backups in a remote location
  • I have created multiple automatizations, one of the most notable was a user distribution script (1000+ lines in bash), from one source to multiple destinations without using any sync provided by the 3rd party software’s – according to the limitation we had
  • I have implemented an IPsec Cisco VPN Solution for remote connectivity to our lab environment. That was a huge improvement compared with the old way to do it(ssh tunnels)
  • I was deeply involved in managing the Docker Swarm where we hosted 7-8 very big and important containers (Jira, Confluence, Artifactory, SonarQube, Nexus, Jenkins, etc.)
  • During my time in the company, I was known as “the Windows guy” since I knew Windows environment better than anyone else, even though I am also a Linux guy
Technologies: VMWare, XEN, VEEAM, Borg, Docker Swarm, Linux, Windows, Samba, DNS, DHCP, Cisco and HP Switches, Synology and Free NAS, HP Blade Servers, MySQL, MSSQL, PHP
