Project description

In times of emerging new technologies and disruptive approaches of doing business, organizations are being challenged and must scan and monitor the environment more intensively than ever. As traditional utility businesses remain under significant pressure and trends such as decarbonization, decentralization or digitalization represent real game changers, observing and evaluating potential new business models and threats to the existing business is becoming unavoidable.

In order to master the challenge, the Radar was set up to be an early-warning system to detect threats and/or opportunities emerging from new technologies business models and trends. Thus, it is a universal knowledge base with crucial insights that affect the way we have "to play" in the future. The insights generated cover a wide range of topic clusters such as energy conversion, Power-to-X, Storage, Renewables, IT, Electromobility etc. It is an Ongoing project.

Task description:

Technology scouting and research

• Identify, describe and evaluate relevant technologies (technically and also commercially) using various information sources (e.g. market and technology studies, scientific papers, innovation search tool, internal and external topic experts etc.).
• The technology scouting will deal with technologies closely related to the energy and utility sector, especially covering the clusters storage/flexibility, hydrogen, power-to-x/ power-to-liquids, unconventional renewables, biomass, heat and power production
• The consultant will scout and research on his own, but in close co-operation with team and resources.
• The consultant will evaluate the technical feasibility and commercial potential (market potential / customer demand, time to market)

Scouting for new and innovative business models in the energy and related sectors

• Identify, describe and evaluate business models (technically and also commercially) using various information sources (e.g. market and technology studies, scientific papers, innovation search tool, internal and external topic experts etc.
• The technology scouting will deal with business models closely related to the energy and utility sector, especially covering the clusters storage/flexibility, hydrogen, power-to-x/ power-to-liquids, unconventional renewables, biomass, heat and power production. Focus will be on B2B market segments.
• The consultant will scout and research on his own, but in close co-operation with team and resources
• The consultant will evaluate the technical feasibility and commercial potential (market potential / customer demand, time to market)

Documentation of conducted insights and results performed in MS Excel and PowerPoint.

Preparation of different insight sharing formats (e.g. reports, presentations, workshops, webinars) in order to present results to management and key stakeholders from other units. The consultant will prepare and present together and in co-operation with the dedicated team.

Experience:

• Deep knowledge of technologies applied or potentially relevant in the energy and utility industry
• Strong understanding of energy systems and markets / regulation
• Strong commercial understanding of the energy industry
• 5-7 years of experience in the energy industry or related sectors, ideally as a technical consultant with engineering or science background
• Master's degree in engineering or science
• Analytical, business and strategic expertise to quickly and holistically understand and evaluate technologies, technology applications, and related business models
• Excellent oral and written communication, negotiation, documentation and cross-functional management skills.
• Language skills: English mandatory German advantageous
